Volunteer Screening Program

This program focuses on education and training by providing non-profit organizations with a suite of tools and resources for screening volunteers.

Program Components

  1. Education, Training and Resources - Guides, templates, checklists, webinars, workshops and on-demand training modules to develop more robust and effective volunteer screening practices, are available free of charge to all Alberta non-profits organizations.
  2. Volunteer Screening Program Development Grants - A limited number of small grants are available to eligible non-profit organizations for the purpose of supporting and increasing organizational capacity to develop and implement volunteer screening policies and practices.
  3. Vulnerable Sector Check fee waiver - The program will continue to provide funding for the Vulnerable Sector Check fee waiver, with a focus on targeting appropriate volunteer positions for this funding support.

Developed with the input of stakeholders and police agencies, the Volunteer Screening Program expands upon the former Volunteer Police Information Check Program (VPICP) which was established in 2009 and covered the cost of police information checks for eligible non-profit/voluntary sector organizations.

The new Volunteer Screening Program is a unique partnership, funded by Alberta Culture and Tourism and administered and delivered by Volunteer Alberta.

The intent of these program enhancements is to support non-profit organizations in continuing to ensure that clients, particularly vulnerable Albertans, are able to access important programs and services.
