A public participation process ensures that decisions reflect community needs and priorities. Building trust and demonstrating commitment is a critical component
of public participation.
Public participation consists of a variety of activities ranging from sharing information to active engagement of stakeholders in the implementation stages.
Public and stakeholder participation processes include:
- Identifying purpose and intent
- Defining appropriate levels of public and stakeholder participation
- Planning and managing all aspects of the interaction with the public
- Assessing and interpreting the information gathered
Drawing on the experience of facilitators in the Community Development Unit, a handbook and a series of tip sheets have been created for facilitating large public events and achieving effective results.
The Alberta Ministry of Municipal Affairs has created a toolkit to guide municipalities in maintaining good relationships through appropriate public input into Council decisions.
