Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2018
Join the celebration with millions of volunteers across Canada during National Volunteer Week, April 15-21. Communities throughout Alberta and across the nation will recognize the important contributions of volunteers with events and awareness campaigns.
National Volunteer Week is a perfect opportunity to say thank you to the amazing volunteers in our communities whose efforts ensure we have access to the recreational, cultural and social programs that enhance the quality of life of all Albertans and make our province a better place. From students to seniors; from newcomers to those Alberta-born and raised, volunteers are drawn from all walks of life. All share a common desire to make a difference in the lives of their families, friends, neighbours and communities.
The Government of Alberta, in partnership with Volunteer Alberta, is proud to support Alberta’s communities in their efforts to celebrate and raise awareness of the value and vital contributions of Alberta’s volunteers. The History of National Volunteer Week
National Volunteer Week was first proclaimed in Canada in 1943. Women's Voluntary Services in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver organized special events to draw the
public's attention to the vital contribution women made to the war efforts on the home front.
In the late 1960s, the idea of a designated week to honour volunteers was revived, and focus was broadened to include all community volunteers. During the 1970s and 1980s
this special week grew in importance with local volunteer centres.
In 1990, the third week in April was proclaimed National Volunteer Week in all communities across the country. This week is now firmly established as the highlight of the
year for paying tribute to Canada's volunteers.
Local, regional, national and international events are held throughout the week to increase awareness of the important
role of volunteers and non-profit/voluntary sector and to encourage volunteerism in our communities.
